24..." Theo Ratliff was selected in the first round of the NBA draft in 1995 with the 18th pick by the Detriot Pistons. He was sent to Philadelphia in a midseason deal for Jerry Stackhouse. By the next season, Ratliff was third in the league in blocked shots and a member of the All-Defensive team. During the 1999-2000 season Ratliff missed 25 games due to ankle problems. During the next season he was selected to the All-Star team despite having missed 28 games during the first half of the season. Unfortunately, a broken wrist prevented him from playing and sidelined him for 6 more weeks. The 76ers traded him to the Atlanta Hawks in February of 2001. The trade proved a major disappointment to Ratliff, but the worst was yet to come. After a series of injury-plagued seasons, Ratliff faced a career-threatening hip injury that forced him to miss 79 of 82 games during the 2001-2002 season. Seattle, his old team JASON QUICK SEATTLE -- With 4.3 seconds left in a game that he tried to say meant nothing all week, Nate McMillan found himself surrounded by three of his players. Still stressed despite holding a seven-point lead, McMillan was approached by Zach Randolph, Ruben Patterson and Juan Dixon. And finally, the Trail Blazers coach smiled, if only for a bit, realizing that yes, this game did mean something. It was Blazers 116, SuperSonics 111 on Monday night at KeyArena, as Randolph scored 32 points to help the Blazers give McMillan a victory in his first game in the city where he played and coached for the past 19 years. "I'd be lying if I said this wasn't special," McMillan said. "I thought the guys played for me tonight." And nobody played harder, or more effectively, than Randolph, who hit 14 of 24 shots and grabbed nine rebounds to finish with his second-highest scoring output of his career. "Coach never said, 'Go play for me', but you could tell he wanted this," Randolph said. "We knew it would be a big game for him. So you could say we played for him, but we played for ourselves, too." Randolph's huge night, which included a back-breaking tip-in with 54.8 seconds left that gave Portland a 106-99 lead and momentarily stopped a Sonics rally, came after his worst two-game stretch of the season. He had nine points and two rebounds against New Jersey, followed by seven points and four rebounds at Golden State. The secret to the turnaround? "Zach drank his Theo Juice," Dixon said. The "juice" is an energy drink called Rebound, which Ratliff sponsors. It is mixed and then dispensed to the Blazers players before and during games. But for the past two games, Randolph has abstained from the drink...but on Monday, he went back to the mixture. |
